Day 1: Private Red Tour Cappadocia
The Private Cappadocia Red Tour begins at 10:00 AM from your hotel in Goreme (or earlier from other towns). The first stop is the Goreme Open Air Museum, one of Cappadocia’s most famous attractions, featuring nine ancient rock-cut churches adorned with Byzantine frescoes.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 1985) was once a thriving monastic complex, and your guide will provide insights into its historical and cultural significance.
After spending 1.5 hours at the museum, we will head to Love Valley Panorama Point, where you can admire stunning fairy chimneys and panoramic views of Red and Rose Valleys.
Next, we visit Pasabag Fairy Chimneys, also known as Monks Valley, home to multi-headed fairy chimneys, some of the best-preserved in Cappadocia. Your guide will explain the fascinating geological formations and history of the region.
We then proceed to Avanos, a town known for its 4,000-year-old pottery-making tradition along the Red River. Here, you will witness a live kick-wheel pottery demonstration, showcasing a craft passed down from the Hittite civilization.
Following this, we will visit Devrent Valley (Imagination Valley), famous for its unique rock formations resembling animals and objects, including the famous camel-shaped fairy chimney. The naturally sculpted rocks allow for creative interpretations, making this valley a fun and scenic stop.
At 4:00 PM, we will return you to your hotel for the evening.
Day 2: Private Green Tour Cappadocia
Your guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel at 9:30 AM for the Private Green Tour, which takes you to the less-explored yet equally stunning parts of Cappadocia.
The first stop is Goreme Panorama Point, where you will get breathtaking views of Goreme Town and its surrounding valleys. Your guide will provide an overview of the region’s geology, landscape, and history.
Next, we visit Derinkuyu Underground City, the largest underground city in Cappadocia, descending 60 meters below the surface. This ancient settlement features storage rooms, kitchens, churches, living quarters, and ventilation shafts, showcasing how early inhabitants used these cities as a refuge.
From here, we travel to Ihlara Canyon, one of Turkey’s most picturesque canyons. We will take a scenic 3-kilometer hike along the Melendiz River, passing by rock-carved Byzantine churches adorned with frescoes. The hike concludes in the village of Belisirma, where you will have free time for lunch at a local restaurant by the river.
We then drive to Selime Monastery, the largest religious structure in Cappadocia. Here, you can explore the rock-carved church, cathedral, kitchen, and monastic dormitories, all offering impressive views of the surrounding landscape.
The tour concludes with a visit to Pigeon Valley Panorama, where you can take in the stunning views of Uchisar Castle and thousands of carved pigeon houses, once used by locals for collecting pigeon droppings as fertilizer. This was an astonishing 2-day tour – we had such a short time in Turkey, (only four days – we’ll definitely be back!) so we wanted to get the most out of it. We had a driver included, so were able to cover a lot of ground, very comfortably, in this geological and historical wonderland. Our tour guide in Cappadocia, Aykut, was kind, humorous, always interesting and very, very knowledgeable; and showed us a delightful variety of places – all of them wonderful, and – thanks to him – accessible. We couldn’t possibly have seen as much on our own – nor would we have been as well-informed. We stayed in a so-called “MDC cave hotel”; cool and comfortable, with a delicious meze breakfast included. We did the hot air balloon trip early in the morning, of the second day; and saw the sunrise with the changing light on the unique landscape of Cappadocia below us. He took us on a gentle hike through this flower-and butterfly-filled landscape, (I loved this!) and to the extensive bronze-age underground city. During our trip we saw, up close, the extraordinary sculptured landscape of this region – a crossroad of civilisations over thousands of years – and even went inside a rock house, still used by its owners. I would highly recommend this tour – romos travel made sure, as did Aykut, our guide, that we had arrived safely at the airport, and then had been met and delivered to our driver back in Istanbul. For us, it couldn’t have been easier, thanks to all the hard work in the background – we would certainly use Romos Travel again.
